Description
It is truly special to watch a great egret (Ardea alba) hunt for its meal, as this one was doing in a tributary at low tide near Richardson Bay, Mill Valley, California north of San Francisco.
Beautiful ripples formed in the calm still water as this magnificent bird slowly made its way through the marsh. Seeing that it was headed toward a footbridge over the tributary, I walked over to that vantage point and waited while the egret came almost directly beneath, seemingly oblivious as I clicked my camera.
This great egret would scope out the area, and with its laser eyesight, wait patiently until it made a sudden lightening strike to spear a fish with uncanny accuracy.
I love how God illustrates life principles throughout creation!
“So let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9, Tree of Life Version (TLV)
A member of the heron family, the great egret itself was hunted almost to extinction in the 19th and early 20th century for its feathers. Thanks to conservation and protection efforts, this stunning bird can now be commonly seen in North and South America and in various parts of the world.

Embedded in the top right-hand corner is the Hebrew acronym for "B'ezras Hashem" [ב ס " ד] meaning "with God's help". It is a reminder to me as an artist and photographer of my dependence on the Almighty, the Originator of all creativity. This is a similar acknowledgement used by great artists like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel who signed their work with the Latin phrase, "Soli Deo gloria" which means, "Glory to God alone".
