Description
A great egret (Ardea alba) strikes a commanding pose searching for dinner at low tide near San Francisco Bay.
This photo was taken early evening in October 2015. A large red leaf happened to fall and rest on a rock in the lower right corner of the photo -- a reminder of autumn.
The great egret stands up to 3.3 feet (1 meter) in height, which puts into perspective how large the shoreline rocks are in this photo.
Egrets were hunted almost to extinction for their feathers in the 19th century. Thanks to conservation efforts, these magnificent birds are plentiful once again, and can be seen in wetlands throughout North America and southern Europe.
Indeed, the Creator has given us great responsibility to be good stewards of wildlife for future generations to enjoy.
